Reading: Krauss, Passages. Pgs 1-6. Due January 12th

Preparation for tomorrow morning January 12th @ 9am:

1. Please read the foreword and introduction for tomorrow's class. It is only 6 pages. I suggest highlighting some things that stand out to you in text, and looking up any terms/references you are not familiar with.

Response:

Be sure to look for some better documentation of the piece Laocoön, and also of Brancusi, Duchamp and Gabo from the 1920's.

What would have been so problematic about the classification of these artists'  works at the time it they were made?

How did artists/critics/views find themselves in a similar position when this text was written (late 1970's)?

How do we find ourself in a similar situation today?

Of the object-oriented "sculptural" work being made today, what type of work do you find most challenging to accept or understand?

We will spend the first 35 mins of class discussing this. Please come prepared to share your thoughts. Bring some notes to help you communicate your ideas.

Lastly, don't forget to come properly dressed for the studio- solid shoes (not sandals), nothing loose fitting or too much jewelry, something you don't mind getting dirty.

The second part of class will be the presentation of the first project and some exercises to get moving.
