Sculpture 1- Linear Sculpture. Due Feb 20th.

Creative Problem

Using only additive processes, create a sculpture that appears to defy gravity. The following constraints have been placed on the project.:
  • Nothing can hang from the ceiling.
  • The sculpture must be grounded to the floor- no part of it can touch a wall.
  • The sculpture should be approached "in the round"- composition should be considered from every angle.
  • I (6ft tall) must be able to walk under or through the sculpture without bending over.

Size and Materials

There is no other restriction on size, or materials.

Concepts to consider

Line, Mass, Volume, Physical/Implied Space, Physical/Implied Weight. Basic use of the Elements and Principles to create something visually and conceptually engaging. Don't forget about color and texture.

Notes

For this exercise, the additive process refers to:
  • Modeling (of a homogenous material)
  • Fabrication (of a homogenous material. ex. wood joinery, metal brazing, sheet metal, 3-D printing, pvc pipes and connetors, etc)
  • Assemblage (of dissimilar materials)
  • Growth (biological processes that produce mass through growth, etc. Nothing dangerous)
Please refrain from the casting process at this time.

No subtractive processes.

More Notes:
  1. Possible Materials include PVC tubing, branches, wood 2x4s, wood 1x2s, 1/8" steel round rod, used tent poles, used umbrellas... what else?
  2. PVC can be bent using a heat gun or boiling water (please be careful, watch some tutorials like these, and wear proper clothing).
  3. Wood can be joined using wood joinery, screws, wire through holes, zip ties... what else? Thin wood can also be bent by wetting it/steaming it.
  4. Please see the slideshare presentation I am sending via email for a basic overview of sculptural processes.

Schedule

Due Feb 13th
ndividual student in-process reviews with me. Your project should be 75% complete. We will trouble-shoot and map out how to resolve the work.

Checklist:
  • Detailed sketches in your sketchbook (brought to class)
  • #WIP (work in process) images posted to instagram feed.
  • Project brought in 75% complete.
  • Questions for us.
  • Materials and tools you need to work during class.

 Due Feb 20th
Final Critique. Work may be presented in the Rm 5102,
Wood Shop, the hallways, Loading Docks or the green space next to parking garage. ( We will see outdoor pieces last)

Form and Material Research

Here are some samples of form that can be achieved. Not limited to these types of things. this is an open project. Just be sure you meet the requirements listed at the top.
